Guide
Microphone foam covers & windscreens: the complete guide
Everything you actually need to know about the foam (or furry) cover that goes over your mic — what it does, which type you need, how to keep it clean, and which one fits your microphone. Written by a London workshop that custom-prints them.
What does a microphone foam cover do?
A foam cover — also called a windscreen or windshield — slips over the head of your mic and does four jobs:
- • Stops plosives — softens the "p" and "b" pops that spike your audio.
- • Cuts wind & breath noise — essential for handheld, interview and outdoor use.
- • Protects the capsule — keeps moisture, spit and dust off the delicate mic element, which extends its life.
- • Brands you — a custom-printed cover puts your logo on screen every second you're recording. It's the cheapest always-on branding a creator has.
Foam vs furry (“dead cat”) — which do you need?
Foam is for indoors: podcasts, streaming, studios, stage, conferences and events. Furry windscreens (the fluffy "dead cat") are for outdoor filming and high wind. If you record at a desk or on a stage, you want foam — and that's what the vast majority of podcasters, streamers and presenters use.
How to clean a microphone foam cover
- Slide the foam off the mic.
- Hand-wash in lukewarm water with a single drop of mild soap.
- Squeeze gently to rinse — don't wring or twist (it tears the foam).
- Air-dry completely, away from heat. Never use a hairdryer.
- Only refit once it's fully dry — never put a damp cover on the mic.
Which cover fits your microphone?
Covers are sized to the mic. Here are the most common models and the matching custom-printed cover — each made to fit, with your logo:

Why brand your mic cover?
A plain grey foam cover is a missed opportunity. A custom-printed one turns your mic into a logo placement that's visible in every video, stream, clip and photo — for the price of the cover itself. For podcasts with multiple hosts, conferences, churches and events, branded covers make a setup look instantly professional.
And if you've got an audience, our Creator Program pays you 10% for sharing us — your branded cover can literally pay for itself.
