Personalised birthday banners: sizes, photos and where to hang them
A birthday banner is read from across a room or a garden, so it works differently from a card. Big type, one photo and a colour that stands out from the wall beat a crowded design every time. Here is how to get it right.
Pick the size from where it will hang
- 1 m × 0.5 m: a doorway, the back of a highchair, a photo-booth backdrop for a first birthday.
- 2 m × 0.6 m: the usual party size, across a garden fence, above a buffet table or along a landing wall.
- 3 m × 1 m: a gate, a marquee or the front of the house for a 40th, 50th or 90th that the neighbours are meant to see.
Enter any width and height on the product and the price updates live. If you are unsure, measure the wall or fence and take 20 cm off each end for the ties.
Adding a photo
Personalised banners with photos print well as long as the photo is sharp at the size it will be used. A phone photo is fine for a 40 cm square panel on a 2 m banner; a photo that is already small on screen will not be improved by making it bigger. One photo, or a row of three for a milestone birthday, works better than a collage; we lay it out, balance the colour and show you a proof before printing. Baby photos, school photos and "then and now" pairs are the common requests.
Wording that reads from a distance
The name and the age are the message; everything else is decoration. A 2 m banner is read from six or seven metres away, which needs letters at least 15 cm tall. Keep it to a line or two: "Happy 1st Birthday Amara" or "Dad is 60". Dark text on a light background, or white on a strong colour, reads best in photographs, and the photographs are the point.
What the banner is made of
All our birthday banners are printed on 440 gsm PVC, the same weatherproof material as our event banners, with hemmed edges and metal eyelets every 50 cm. It takes rain and wind, wipes clean, rolls up afterwards and keeps for the next birthday. Many customers have us design the age as a separate panel so the same banner comes out every year with a new number.
Hanging it
Cable ties or string through the eyelets fix it to a fence, railing or gazebo in a couple of minutes. Indoors, bunting hooks or removable adhesive hooks hold a 2 m banner without marking the paint; thread the top eyelets and let it hang. For a flat photo backdrop, fix all four corners and the middle eyelets so it does not belly in the wind.
Timing
You see a free digital proof first; after approval, printing takes one to two working days and standard UK delivery is free, three to four working days after dispatch. A paid next-day option is there for a party that is closer than that, and London customers can collect from Spelman Street in E1. Order a week ahead and there is room for a change of mind on the proof.
